# NFTs Aren't Dead—They're Just Finding Their Real Use Case
The loudest mistake in crypto was treating NFTs like the final form of internet ownership when they were mostly a crude distribution layer for attention. The market corrected that delusion brutally. Floor prices cracked, royalty assumptions collapsed, and illiquid collections discovered what happens when social consensus is the only bid support left in the room.

Uniswap v3 introduced concentrated liquidity. Instead of passively spreading capital from zero to infinity, LPs choose a price range defined by lower and upper ticks. ENS is another clear example of real NFT utility. An ENS name is not valuable because it is scarce art. It is valuable because it is readable identity, routing, and namespace ownership on-chain.

Off-chain value capture still dominates many projects
If a collection’s value depends mainly on a team shipping merch, media, or partnerships off-chain, the NFT can become more of a cap table badge than a self-sustaining on-chain asset. That can work, but it is less trust-minimized and harder to underwrite.
Actionable Rules for Builders and Investors
The best NFT opportunities now are not the ones shouting the loudest. They are the ones with clean mechanism design.
For builders
Use ERC-721 when the position or right is truly unique. Use ERC-1155 when the asset is semi-fungible, such as ticket tiers, credential classes, or batch-issued memberships.
Design value capture around hard functionality. Access control, fee routing, renewals, claim rights, upgrade paths, and delegated permissions are stronger than vague brand promises.
Do not rely on royalties as the main business model. If economics matter, embed them into primary issuance, renewals, subscriptions, vault logic, or app-level utility.
Choose liquidity architecture based on asset structure. If items are near-substitutes, AMMs and vaults can help. If trait dispersion is wide, use order books, auctions, or RFQ-style discovery instead.
For investors
Ask one question first: what unique right does this NFT control?
If the answer is weak, the thesis is weak.
Then ask four more:

That property can be an LP position. A name. A subname with burned fuses. A proof of attendance credential. A game character with its own account. A vault receipt. A revocable pass. A strategy container.
Once you stop forcing every NFT into the collectible-speculation bucket, the sector starts making more sense.
That is the real use case. Not every image. Not every collection. Not every promise. But the core primitive is alive, useful, and increasingly embedded in the parts of crypto that actually function.
